We're now less than three days from the release of J. Cole's latest project, the Friday Night Lights mixtape. It's not certain if it's meant to serve as the precursor to his much anticipated, not-yet-titled debut, but hey, it's a batch of free music from one of hip-hop's better new(ish) artists.
The tape's newest leak -- the self-produced, lyrically heavy "Before I'm Gone" -- displays just why so many critics and listeners have jumped on Cole's bandwagon. The production recalls what made Kanye West's earlier beats so endearing, what with the steady piano and choral samples. Additionally Cole's bars are intricately spit, providing a look at his day-to-day life as a rising star from Fayetteville, N.C.
But the track's glaring problem is its hook, which has become a common cause for concern with Cole's music. The only excuse is that yes, these are indeed mixtape tracks and typically these projects are more about rapping than catchy choruses. But his inability to craft strong hooks clearly remains his one downside.
