"Creeper," a newly released track from Islands' forthcoming sophomore release Arm's Way, doesn't actually sneak up at you at all. The subject matter is home invasions and bloody death, but the slick and immediate tune comes across like a less frantic outtake from a recent Of Montreal album. As opposed to the contents of a song by Kevin Barnes, when Nick Thornburn sings about being stabbed in the heart here I don't think the shiv is metaphorical. Thorburn's lyrics--be they Islands or Unicorns--have always had a strong infatuation with mortality. They've typically been much more accepting about the great beyond than this though. The prospect of being stabbed in your house by an intruder is tough to be zen about, I guess. You can dance to his dismemberment at least. [Photo Credit: Rachel Carr ]
At the start of the track, I thought hmm... not bad. By the end I was thinking pretty great.
Seems like a grower. I was really surprised by the vocal style/filter. Flirting with Akon-style fakeness, but I don't necessarily mind.
Interesting you should mention Barnes. In my head, Thorburn and Barnes are the same exact person, even though I can cognize the differences.
A weak and feeble attempt to resurrect this once great band. This sounds more like a neo-hipster 80's dance wannabe than their well thought out, greasy and groovin' meaty music found on their most excellent album Return to the Sea.
This is well worth the wait. At first I was afraid it would be over-polished and sound really fake, sort of how aesthetist is describing it but it sounds great! I really like the guitar bits and how it's very drum-driven.
I was laying here not wanting to get up, then I put it on and suddenly was dancing on the bed in my underwear. I need to set it as my alarm.
if you call youself an ISLANDS fan and you don't like this.. you're not an ISLANDS fan. why do you want to hear another Return to the Sea? it's about progression, mthrfkrs.
