Iron & Wine’s Kiss Each Other Clean is out this week on the band’s new label Warner Bros, so Sam Beam and his group dutifully turned up on Conan O’Brien’s show last night (Jan. 24) to play “Tree by the River” from it. We’re likely to see a lot of Beam and his band this year—an exhaustive tour spread over four months is already underway—which suits the more polished, FM radio-friendly version of Iron & Wine that the band is leaning toward these days. The singer has talked this album up as a homage to ‘70s rock/pop and it’s not hard to see why—“Tree by the River” manages to combine the soft sleekness of Fleetwood Mac circa Rumors with a few rougher Neil Young edges.
