It's been two years since Vancouver's Hot Hot Heat have released any new music and it's probably been five or six since the phrase "New music from Hot Hot Heat" engendered a lot of excitement. Regardless, yesterday the band released two tracks from their upcoming album, "Future Breeds" and "JFK's LSD."
While the tracks don't come out of left field or introduce any wildly new elements to band's music, they both trade in the powerful melodic sense that decorated their other releases for a darker, angular sound. "JFK's LSD" in particular sounds an early b-side from the Rapture or something off the Liars' first album.
Neither track is a sudden revelation, but both are refreshing after 2007's Happiness, Ltd. proved that the band had mined all it could out of the radio-friendly aspects of its sound. No other details on the new album, but the new songs prove that it'll at least be worth keeping an eye out for.
i really liked their 2003 single "bandages" but never got into anything else i heard. the instruments on "future breeds" sound nice but i still think his voice is kinda grating.
i saw them perfom "bandages" and that other single they had at an 80's festival. the cure were there, echo and the bunnymen, violent femms.. it was the kroq's 80's inland invasion.. good times. that was an amazing show. i must brag, the seats rocked too.
