Hockey are a Portland, Ore. band that sound like any number of new-new-new-wave bands. They are not Hockey Night, a Minneapolis folk-gaze band. Hockey is also a sport played by fast-moving, mostly European men who try to put a small rubber disk, called a puck, into a net.
Hockey are signed to Virgin, following a bidding war that broke out over the band after they got big-upped by members of Gang of Four and the Talking Heads. Their debut single, "Too Fake," just got a video, and the song borrows heavily from New Wave forefathers, but sounds like a more sincere version of the Rapture (which is a pretty good thing).
The band have a debut album coming out sometime this year, no word on whether or not Basketball or Jai Alai make an appearance. [Fader]
