Hercules & Love Affair: "Shelter" (The xx Cover) (Streaming)
Hercules & Love Affair are set to pull a single from their Blue Songs album in the shape of “Painted Eyes” in April. But the attention on that release is likely to be drawn to its B-side, which is a cover of The xx song “Shelter.” The band lifts the song out of its doldromatic origins, adding a lightly bubbling electronic backing and some emotive vocalizing from singer Kim Ann Foxman. Thankfully, it’s a cover that actually does something different with the song instead of aiming for pointless replication, although the melancholy undertow of the original remains. Clearly, you can’t remove all traces of The xx now matter how hard you try (and some people have tried really, really hard).
