Guns N' Roses

Better (Audio Stream)

Average Rating: 7.50

So in the wake of surprisingly good early reviews for Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy, Q104.3 in New York has gained access to the second released track from the album. "Better" starts off sounding more like Gwen Stefani than Guns N' Roses, but even without Slash, once the guitars kick in, you know this is GNR. It's certainly a more modern, down-to-earth GNR. It's almost as if Axl Rose knew he needed to heed to the digital era (take that, AC/DC!). On one level, the song sounds no better than Jimmy Eat World. But on another, it sounds like something we haven't really heard before: a combination of '80s hair metal with 2000s mainstream, emo-leaning rock. That weird combination turns "Better' into something more mystifying than could ever be expected, and no other band but a latter-day Guns N' Roses could produce it. Maybe the positive reviews aren't all that far off. Maybe.
