Guilty Simpson: "Friends Only" prod. Madlib
If you happen to grab either the digital or physical copy of Madlib and Guilty Simpson's OJ Simpson record, you won't see this track on there. But you will be the proud new owner of a 45 featuring "Friends Only," which, production-wise, is a bit jarring. It appears at first that the track's beat is derived from Madlib's "Umm Hmm" production off Erykah Badu's fantastic New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh). Then, there's the fact that Simpson references the remix version of Ode to the Ghetto. So that can only mean that this track, which was once left on the cutting room floor, saw its beat come back to life on Badu's LP...before it could be released in its original form with Simpson over it. Either way, I prefer its presence on Return of the Ankh, even though it works here, too.
