Grouper: "Rising Height" (MP3)

Grouper's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill was one of my favorite albums of 2008. The way Liz Harris obscures her stark, dirge-like compositions in swelling atmospherics is entirely her own; her latest single, "Rising Height," bears the same heady, droning style, except this time around she obscures even the slightest hints at discrete melody, giving it all up to the ether. It's an immersive listen, and suggests there are unexplored aspects to the reverb-as-main-course approach. [GvsB]
