Last week we saw Grinderman bring "Worm Tamer" to Jools Holland's show in the U.K, and now an extended Friday night edition of Later brings us this version of "Heathen Child" from the excellent Grinderman 2. This is one of the standout cuts from the record, and is delivered here with a righteous fury that few bands in the contemporary rock scene could ever hope to match.
Warren Ellis is clearly relishing his role as he pulls great shards of feedback and distortion from his guitar, while Cave spits out lyrics at a furious pace and hits on a "give me the money" coda to the song that is absent from the recorded version. The climax involves Ellis picking up his violin and causing it to shriek and scream while Cave pounds away at an organ. Those live North American dates in November just can't come around soon enough.
