Stephen Colbert interviewed Green Day last night (May 21), and they also played a track from their new rock opera, 21st Century Breakdown. “Is it about the death of the auto industry?” Colbert asked, in reference to the album’s title. The host also asks why they are so angry, and Billie Joe Armstrong, still looking like a petulant teen, counters by saying he thinks their music is “uplifting.”
Colbert also breaches the subject of WalMart’s proposed censorship of 21st Century Breakdown, allowing Armstrong to briefly discuss why they refused to meet their demands. The highlight of the clip is a song Colbert performs himself, which is immediately followed by the band’s own run through of “Know Your Enemy."
