Gorillaz are in New York City this week, and they will play a show at Madison Square Garden tonight (Oct. 8) with a little help from Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, and a huge array other special guests. They previewed that performance last night on David Letterman’s show, with this version of “Rhinestone Eyes” from Plastic Beach, which was supplemented by an entire Gorrilaz concert in the Letterman studios, currently streaming here.
There are some mishaps during Letterman’s introduction to the band here—apparently they weren’t quite ready to play—but when they hit their stride it’s clear that the MSG crowd is going to get something very special tonight. This is Gorillaz stripped down to their core unit, but even then it’s an impressive performance, with Damon Albarn flanked by Clash men Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, and the singer clearly having a blast by hamming it up for the cameras throughout.
