There comes a point when a band has tried on so many genres that it feels less like they’re trying to be eclectic and more like they’re blindly following trends. Take Goldfrapp, for example, who were attempting to mix up pastoral folk with electronica on Seventh Tree in 2008, and are now knee deep in cheesy ‘80s synth sounds for 2010’s Head First.
But at least we have “Rocket,” which is a fairly decent stab at distilling all those syrupy ‘80s sounds into one palatable pop song, as this performance of the song on Jonathan Ross’s show on Friday (March 16) demonstrates. Singles sales are soaring in the U.K. and this might be one of the reasons why—because there’s really not much reason to buy Head First if you’ve already shelled out for this track.
