“Gold Faces”

Okkervil River’s latest push behind this year’s great I Am Very Far comes tomorrow via the “Your Past Life As A Blast” single. It’s the follow-up to this past June’s release of “Rider” and features one hell of a B-side in “Gold Faces.” While often times it’s frontman Will Sheff’s honest, adventurous lyricism that serves as the highlight of an Okkervil River track, the musicianship is what really drives “Gold Faces.” Sheff’s longing croon sits neatly atop slow-building layers of acoustic guitar and bass until they weave in and out of backwards guitars, pots and pans, and distortion, which serve to cause one big blow-out at the end.

You can listen to the track at Pitchfork. The “Your Past Life As A Blast” 7″ drops tomorrow on Jagjaguwar.
