Now in their middle age, the rappers of the Wu-Tang are becoming more writerly with their lyrics, more concerned with microscopic-level details and pinpoint characterizations. As "Miranda," the first single off Meth, Ghost, and Rae's eagerly anticipated Wu Massacre album, shows, these graying princes of Staten Island may be losing some of the venom that defined their younger days, but their ability to spin a yarn is unequalled.
This track is late-night story-swapping as its finest. With a girl named "Miranda," or three girls named "Miranda"-- it's hard to know whether guys are talking about the same girl or three girls with the same name -- as the subject, the hood triumvirate trade pithy anecdotes over a dusty soul sample. Raekwon: "She came like volcanoes in late fall." Ghost: "I met her in a villa in Vancouver, blowing her man's Buddha." Meth: "Cinnamon skin, her sign is Libra." It seems unfair to declare a winner when all three performances are so exceptional, but to my ear Ghost distinguishes himself when he rhymes Bloomingdales, cutest nails, Jewish males, and computer sales. The Wu-renaissance, which seemed to hit a peak with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II, continues unabated.
excited!
