Fucked Up: Twice Born (MP3)

I've been given the privilege of hearing the new Fucked Up album, The Chemistry of Common Life, in advance. In short, there probably hasn't been an album all year that's knocked my socks off to even close to the same extent as Chemistry has after the first few listens. We'll have a review of it when it comes out on October 7, but until then, we'll post the second track that Matador has made public: the surprisingly blues-y "Twice Born."

While I was similarly left speechless by "No Epiphany" (which has gotten criminally little recognition both here and elsewhere), "Twice Born" is a weaker track, and may even be the weakest of the traditional song-structured tracks on the album (which make up, oh, I don't know, 60% or so of The Chemistry of the Common Life). It's probably the most accessible-sounding song off an album that sounds like little else now or ever, but that may be why Matador is letting us in on it. It's still quite a good little ditty reminiscent of last year's Hidden World, though I made the mistake of listening to it in the context of the entire album first.

I dig this. It seems like just good ol' fashioned driving (and, it must be admitted, pretty male-oriented) rock. But I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
