Fuck Buttons

Ribs Out (Track Review)

Throughout Street Horrssing, Bristol, UK noise duo Fuck Buttons envelop their primal screams and pounding beats in a thick gelatinous fuzz. The most corrosive elements are kept from splitting their audience's headphoned ears thanks to crackling amniotic synths. When that psychedelic goo is drained away, we're left with "Ribs Out," the most overtly punishing (and perhaps strategically shortest) track on their debut LP. Chittering voices initially match the fast paced tribal rhythms, before giving way to full throated screams. Unlike other tracks of theirs, there are no goth melodies to add comfort. It's just the natives of an uncharted land, gathering steam for the hunt. It's greater purpose in the flow of the record, is to knock the listener off guard and create a sense of building unease before delivering them back into the fold of that bloody, beautiful static. But taken as a piece of its own, it's a pointed reminder that despite the wave of crossover attention they've received, Fuck Buttons are not as approachable as their cute and cuddly name might have you believe. Oh, wait...
