Frightened Rabbit: "Confetti" (Lemonheads Cover) (Video)

· by

When the Lemonheads first recorded "Confetti" for 1992's alt-rock classic It's a Shame About Ray, the track was an immediate stand-out.The band's easily digestible beat and chord progression and frontman Evan Dando's "aw shucks" vocal delivery gave the Lemonheads a feel-good deep cut on an album full of memorable tracks (not to mention the super 90s-looking music video they made to support the song's release as a single in the UK).

With all the fun the band seems to be having with the song, it's easy to forget Dando's angst-y lyrics, and Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchinson is definitely one to make happy pop song is to an affair marked by, as he puts it, "Scottish gloom."

Hutchinson feels a connection with Dando, as he sees the song as simply a tune about a boy and a girl (something that Hutchinson himself writes about a lot). It's a bit sad, yes, but overall it's a beautiful reinterpretation of a song that you don't think about too much, and it stands as one of the best episodes of the A.V. Club sessions yet.
