Franz Ferdinand

No You Girls Never Know (MP3)

Average Rating: 5.88

The first taste from Franz Ferdinand's upcoming album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, is sweet. As in candy sweet. As in empty-calorie sweet. "No You Girls Never Know" is mostly what we'd expect from the band, with funky guitar lines and Alex Kapranos mugging up front. A simple but anthemic chorus shows the band shooting for another universal, commercial-soundtracking hit. But if the track is meant to build hype for the album, it might fall short. The mix favors the bland, slick drumming over everything but the vocals, taking some bite out of the track. And if that didn't take the bite out, lines like "Kiss me where your eyes won't meet me," sung in Kapranos' faux-sultry baritone, are enough to render the track a little silly. Let's hope that the rest of Tonight: Franz Ferdinand has a little more substance than this.

Update: The song is no longer streaming on Prefix. See the note from the Web Sherriff below.

Not one of my favorite FF tracks, but I thought it was pretty good although very different than their past work.

I remember them playing this at the Diesel Party and LOVING it. And randomly I was at a Coach Store looking to spend a gift certificate and heard a new FF track and said to the saleswoman, "I can't wait for this album to come out." And she said, "It's been out for ages." I didn't think that was right.

I had a bad FF experience once that put me off them for ages, but after shooting them at the KROQ xmas thing and very much appreciating the concept behind their new artwork (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyeppel/3128654380/) I'm finally starting to warm to them.

countessian... I'm loving the artwork too! I'm a huge fan of Wee Gee's photography, and this style completely works with the style of the song.

I definitely prefer bands who come up with an actual concept for their artwork and the enlisting a photographer (or more than one photographer, in this case) to make it happen to those "let's put our faces on the cover" or "look, here's a blurry picture of a tree I already like" or "ooh, stripes!"

It's not that I actively dislike those other options (and in some cases they can work fantastically well -- especially stripes!) but I think I just give extra credit to bands who put a lot of effort into creating new pictures as well as sounds.
