The first taste from Franz Ferdinand's upcoming album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, is sweet. As in candy sweet. As in empty-calorie sweet. "No You Girls Never Know" is mostly what we'd expect from the band, with funky guitar lines and Alex Kapranos mugging up front. A simple but anthemic chorus shows the band shooting for another universal, commercial-soundtracking hit. But if the track is meant to build hype for the album, it might fall short. The mix favors the bland, slick drumming over everything but the vocals, taking some bite out of the track. And if that didn't take the bite out, lines like "Kiss me where your eyes won't meet me," sung in Kapranos' faux-sultry baritone, are enough to render the track a little silly. Let's hope that the rest of Tonight: Franz Ferdinand has a little more substance than this.
Update: The song is no longer streaming on Prefix. See the note from the Web Sherriff below.
