The VMAs were last night, they passed by without controversy, and you can check out our in-depth coverage here. Florence & the Machine won a minor award at the ceremony—for Best Art Direction—but this was apparently enough to allow her to perform “Dog Days Are Over” for the assembled hordes.
It all begins with a Busby Berkeley-style overhead shot of Florence lying prostrate on a wheel and surrounded by dancers, which momentarily looks like it’s in a studio far away from the VMAs. In fact, the choreography is far more interesting than the song, which is swamped so much by the vocals that it feels like Florence is shouting at us. At least MTV knows who to award the Best Shouter award to next year.
