Karin Dreijer Andersson of the Knife is now performing as Fever Ray, and she has an album out by that name Nov. 24 on Mute Records. Vanity Fair is premiering her video of “Stranger than Kindness,” a Nick Cave song.
Andreas Nilsson, who also produces live shows for the Knife and Fever Ray, directed the video. Under dark lighting, it depicts a fantastical, antiquated sequence of still scenes – providing a nice accompaniment to gothic, tawdry lyrics:
The gaunt fruit of passion
Dies in the light
Stranger than kindness
Your sleeping hands journey
They loiter
Stranger than kindness
You hold me so carelessly close
Tell me I’m dirty
Stranger than kindness
This video is in keeping with Andersson’s taste; in her online biography, she states,
“I prefer lyrics that are … as minimal as possible. I like films the same way, ones with very little dialogue. It’s very important to keep the magic and the feeling of something you can draw yourself. You don’t want to be too literal.”
