Fatlip: "L.A. Girl"

· by

The story of Fatlip from his time in the Pharcyde to his infamous video for “What’s Up Fatlip?” by Spike Jonze is a well-known tale with an incomplete ending. After filming one of Jonze’s most famous music videos, Fatlip kinda disappeared. In 2005, he released The Lonliest Punk to little fanfare and mixed reviews. Then back into oblivion he went, known more as that dude who left The Pharcyde at their peak, made a cool video and then vanished.

Now, surprisingly, Fatlip has returned from the void and dropped a really strange single titled, “LA Girl.” His trademark, snot-filled flow has been replaced by a faux-English accent over a cheesy-80’s synth that has much more in common with Ian Dury than any of his previous efforts. The video showcases Fatlip still has his sense of humor, although, it does feel a bit contrived this time around without all the self-deprecation involved.

“LA Girl” marks Fatlip’s first release since 2005’s The Loneliest Punk and will likely cause a lot of head scratching for those that still care.

I concur with Andrew. I am just happy to see that he looks healthy and is alive, frankly.
