I have to admit, I doubt a lot of hip-hop heads are looking forward to hearing this track as much as they were anticipating DJ Premier's collaboration with Bun B. But is it just me or did the Bun/Premo collab kind of sound phoned in? Anyway, it looks like Premier has hopped on another big summer release in Fat Joe's The Darkside Vol. 1.
In particular, the legendary producer laced the beat for "I'm Gone," which Fat Joe apparently recorded the night Premo's former Gang Starr partner, Guru, passed away. And you can feel their loss right from the jump. The gloomy beat bounces with a somber loop full of moody strings and piano while Joe humbly eulogizes a number of lost hip-hop figures, from Dilla to Big Pun. He then talks his shit for about four minutes, just as Kanye West did on "Last Call" off The College Dropout.
