Fall Out Boy

What A Catch, Donnie (ft. Elvis Costello and others) (Video)

Normally, Fall Out Boy don’t get discussed much around these parts, as Pete Wentz and company are slated slightly below Tokio Hotel in our blogging priorities. But Elvis Costello, we love that dude. Apparently, the legendary performer is featured on the third single from Fall Out Boy’s upcoming Folie a Deux, “What A Catch, Donnie,” singing a few lines from Fall Out Boy’s first Folie single, “Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet,” so here’s a Fall Out Boy story.

Apparently, the song features a few guests doing vocal melodies of the band’s older songs as a way to… self-reference I guess. Elvis does a few lines around the 3-minute mark of this video, and less cool vocalists (like Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, William Beckett of The Academy Is…, Brendon Urie of Panic at the Disco, and Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship) are also on the track near the end. Elvis’ contribution is head scratching, none the least for the fact that he’s helping out Fall Out Boy, but that he sings lines from a song that appears earlier on the album.

In case you’re interested, Folie A Deux is out on 12/16. [Stereogum]

its BRENDON Urie.

Jesus, learn to get their names right if you're going to do an article about it.

Just because you don't like an artist, you don't have the need to diss them unless they actually suck.

October 17, 2008 at 1:49 a.m.

seconded. to both comments. seriously, wtf?

October 18, 2008 at 3:44 a.m.

Maybe if you actually had a listen to the song and weren't so prejudiced against the band who wrote it, you'd realise that it's easily one of the best songs to be released, by anyone, in a long time.
Then you may understand why Elvis Costello wanted to be involved.

October 18, 2008 at 11:29 a.m.

Nope. Just listened again and it still sucks.

October 18, 2008 at 1:18 p.m.

I'm with you adub, this is some pretty awful stuff... What was Elvis thinking? By the standards of the earlier comments, feel free to diss all you like, because they suck pretty hard.

Journey called, they want their song back.

as someone else already said, it's Brendon Urie. I mean people accidently write Brandon or Brendan a lot and that's bad enough, but Brand? Is that even a name? Or are you trying to make some sort of statement. You can have your own opinion but you can at least do some research. Wikipedia is more accurate.

October 19, 2008 at 11:04 p.m.

Brand?

Nice journalism.

Though I like how people searching for the lyrics to this song will bring this site no one has heard about more hits than it's ever had.

October 20, 2008 at 9:36 a.m.

Changed to Brendon Urie.

Actually the release date is on election day in the U.S. Nov. 4th. And just for the record, this album is definitely a step up from Infinity but nowhere near Take This... But it' is still classic FOB and that's always awesome.

October 23, 2008 at 11:58 a.m.

you're serious? your blogging priorities are higher for Tokio Hotel than it is for Fall Out Boy? not only does Tokio Hotel blow, but they look like the ghost child from The Grudge and it freaks me out.

And Elvis Costello probably wanted to be involved because as much as a lot of people hate to admit it...Fall Out Boy IS talented. Granted I still think their best album is Take This To Your Grave...but, none of the others that followed have really disappointed me.

When are music elitists ever going to realize that just because something is popular, doesn't automatically make it bad.

October 23, 2008 at 12:09 p.m.

Sure Tokio Hotel is higher up. Those dames are red hott.

October 25, 2008 at 12:19 p.m.

OMG u suck Tokio Hotel is crap fall out boy is da bst n dis is their bst song yet n the others song r also kl so dnt critacise until u listen the whole song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why the hell is everyone referring to "Headfirst Slide..." as the first single? What is "I Don't Care" exactly? A pre-single? Idiots.

i love fall out boy

Its obvious that the people who actually take their time to TRY to diss Fall Out Boy are really jealous and stupid cuz they can use their time listening to songs that they lyk listening to. But they r jealous and wanna try to go again millions of fans.

Though some may hate Fall Out Boy, this was the slowest rock song that still had "rock" elements in it. Patrick Stump's voice is outstanding, and bringing in all those other people only helped. I don't really know who Elvis Costello is, but he must be big if anyone is making a fuss over this. I haven't heard of him doing anything but this, so that's how much he matters to me.
Folie A Deux is going to be more like FUCT than Infinity, and probably a cross between that and Take This to Your Grave. In my opinion, this is not the best song on the album. Take a look at "Headfirst Slide into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet" and "America's Suitehearts." They give you a feel for the less-pop-more-rock vibe.
In the Tokio Hotel vs. Fall Out Boy battle, I am ashamed. Of Fall Out Boy and Tokio Hotel lovers. You should realize that these bands are not even in the same league, but that doesn't mean they're not good! For heavens sakes, FOB has an extra instrument, a singer that's hit puberty, and Petepublicity. TH has Germany on its side, a singer that kinda does look like the Grudge but is an amazing singer, and are young. And bilingual. The only thing they have in common is that they have one person with guyliner. They are not even close. I am surprised none of you people recognize that.

This is why kiddies need to be more closely supervised when they are on-line.

In general, people who don't know other artists, nor the stories they have, really shouldn't comment. Apparently, this would include about half the posters around here.

Whats the Line that Elvis Costello Sing?

January 7, 2009 at 8:18 p.m.

Three things should probably be said here:

1st: Anyone who admits that they don’t know who Elvis Costello is – on a music blog – needs to stop posting completely, entirely, forever. Or at least until that person comes to realize that the cornerstones of rock music were solidly laid way, way, way before the emo douchebaggery of Fall Out Boy and its four founding members ever even thought of hitting a tambourine.

2nd: Blogging is, by nature, less formal than objective journalism; it’s not policed and edited as strictly as content like reviews or feature writing because it has to be published immediately, as soon as the news breaks. In the case of a music blog, its sole aim is to report music news fast, not music news perfectly. If you’re someone who doesn’t know who Elvis Costello is, but you’re arguing about the misplacement of a vowel in “Brendon’s” name, you have way too much time on your hands to talk about things that aren’t important.

3rd: Admittedly, Costello could be the poster boy for self promotion and these days it’s borderline annoying. He’s a brilliant lyricist, a multi-talented instrumentalist, and an ambitious artist who’s worked with loads of big names in nearly every musical genre (too laborious to mention here – just read his bio and be awed at his body of work). While most of these projects tend to benefit from his pool of talents, his presence in the industry has become ubiquitous and oversaturated. Costello is and has been everywhere: talk shows and film cameos, appearing alongside everyone from Lucinda Williams to the Beastie Boys, and most recently as host of the Sundance series, “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…”

Anyone who’s available all the time for anything and anyone – especially a high-profile personality like Costello – eventually becomes less interesting. That’s why it’s no surprise to me that he appears on the FoB record; rock God that he is, he’s afraid to lose his edge by not always being there when the next big thing happens, and this has resulted in some less than discriminating choices. Take for example his divorce from Cait O'Riordan (from the Pogues) and his soon thereafter marriage to Diana Krall. To me, that signaled a major shift away from his punk/new wave roots to a more marketable persona with the potential to attract an even bigger fan base.

At any rate, for those of you who are unfamiliar with this man, here’s your chance to wise up: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=ELVIS|COSTELLO&sql=11:aifyxqw5ldte~T1

Reading these comments makes my head hurt. Emo this, and you need to know everything about rock to be a true fan that. People aren't allowed to even enjoy what they like. It IS important to spell an artist's name right just like you expect your own name to be spelled correctly. If you are doing research on the topic get it correct. Obviously the author thought it important and made corrections so that should be the end right there. As for Elvis Costello, WHO CARES??!! I mean, don't get me wrong, he is beyond amazing, but this is a new generation of music listeners here. You don't have to know the entire history of and all the founding fathers of a music genre to be able to appreciate it unless you plan on making it a career. Give these kids a break and let them form their own opinions in peace. You are free to like what you like. While Costello, FOB, The Beatles, etc have a huge fan base and have loyal fans who will defend them til the end of time, other people think they suck, and that's ok! Go do your part to help this country or end world hunger or something useful with your time then looking up things about FOB so you can bash them (or me since that's what you'll focus on now)

holy crap. just enjoy the music, yeah?

April 20, 2009 at 8:49 p.m.

anyone who does not know elvis costello needs to feel ashamed...im 14 and i know his music. FOB is amazing. Not only do they put a huge effort into their songs which are amazing and actually have a deeper meaning than just sex and money, but they reach out to their fans and even the invisible children in africa(thanks to pete). they deserve a hell of a lot more praise than tokio hotel with 1 hit if that....seriously though if u dont like the music...dont listen to it...no one is making you
