Perhaps best known as the production team behind Portland post-rock outfit Grails, Alex Hall and Emil Amos are stepping out on their own this coming January as Lilacs & Champagne. They have weaved together a full-length album built on the psychedelic, Old West sounds of Grails and the beat-centric, sample-chopping ways of Madlib. Yes, that Madlib.
But instead of taking on hip-hop’s usual sample sources — older funk, jazz, and soul records — Hall and Amos went after Polish progressive folk records and radio noise. They also layered in actual instruments and select creepy film samples to create a chilling, atmospheric listen that you can sample below via lead single “Everywhere, Everyone.” Lilacs & Champagne’s self-titled debut drops Jan. 31 via Mexican Summer.
