The video trailer for Estelle's "Freak" offended some of her fans, who interpreted her face paint as a reference to Blackface. Upon seeing this video, though, it's clear that director Nabil Elderkin pushes for cerebral bizarreness and not racial commentary. Diamond shards floating in space, overblown Rocky Horror lips, prismatic lighting and an appreciation for Missy Elliot attest to a cyberpunk interpretation of Salvador Dali moreso than a steamy club hit. Elderkin and Estelle have both collaborated with Kanye West, another black artist who is taking more highbrow approaches.
