The Fix in Portland, Ore., which has been getting some rather impressive shows lately for such a small venue, put together quite a huge surprise for its after-party on July 2. Typically, this particular show's special guest can be found rocking festival stages and bigger theater venues across the nation. But that night, Erykah Badu appeared in front of 300 people for her first show in Portland in quite some time.
Following an opening set from like-minded duo Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins and several DJ sets, Badu took the stage for an intimate but lively performance. She and her DJ, Tumblin' Dice, ripped through several crowd favorites, such as J Dilla-tribute "Love" and hip-hop anthem "Love of My Life." It all came to a head with a moving version of "Soldier," one of the most riveting tracks from the all-around great New Amerykah Part One (Fourth World War).
