Elzhi: "Halftime"
We previewed a track off Elzhi's forthcoming ELmatic project, which serves as a tribute to Nas' classic debut, last month when fellow Prefix writer Craig Jenkins spotted the leak of "Detroit State of Mind." And as you might have been able to tell from that cut, there was something a little different about the production. It turns out ELmatic will feature live-band interpretations of each beat on Illmatic, something that really comes across here on "Halftime." The Large Professor production doesn't lose an ounce of its gritty soul as all the elements -- from the horn stabs to the vocal samples -- are still there. Oh, and Elzhi shows off once again why he's one of Detroit's better kept secrets. If this project doesn't gain him more mass appeal, I don't know what will.
