Elzhi: 'ELmatic' (Mixtape)
Elzhi's tribute to Nas' classic debut, Illmatic, is finally here. And if the leaks are any indication of the final product, you can expect ELmatic to land on year-end lists come December. It would have been promising enough had the Detroit rapper chosen to spit over the instrumentals from the seminal hip-hop album. But he made sure that his tribute went beyond just the rhymes. Elzhi linked with Will Sessions -- a killer band also from the Motor Citty -- to provide live takes on the beats from Pete Rock, Q-Tip, DJ Premier, and Large Professor. It all makes for an engrossing listening experience filled with sharp lyricism, flawless flows, and lush instrumentation.
