Heroes, a compilation of covers curated by War Child, is trying to give Dark Was the Night a run for its money in the "Best 2009 Charity Compilation" category. With contributions from Beck, TV on the Radio, Hot Chip and many others, the disc might just have a shot at winning that fight, particularly if the other entries are as compelling as Elbow's cover of U2's "Running to Stand Still." The British band's lush sound make them a perfect choice to cover U2 and, in fact, word is that Bono and company hand-picked Elbow for the job. And the guys do not disappoint. It is a cover that is faithful to the original, but Elbow seems to live in the slow and steady build up of the song more than U2 did. Rather than waiting to burst the song wide open, Guy Garvey's vocals fill out the quiet piano opening and then haunt the rest of the band when they join in.
Heroes will be out Feb. 16 in the UK, Feb. 24 in the US, and March 3 in Canada. [Stereogum]
