Editors

"Papillon" (Live on Jools Holland) (Video)

Is there still room in the music world for Editors? The band latched onto the post-punk revival that was sparked by Franz Ferdinand earlier this decade, but never reached the same lofty peaks as their peers. Their new album, In This Light and On This Evening, is set for release on Oct. 12.

This version of “Papillon” is another Interpol-lite workout that doesn’t suggest there will be many surprises on the new record. Singer Tom Smith is still trying to channel Ian Curtis while some loud, bloated synths provide distinctly unsatisfactory backing. If Coldplay are a diluted Radiohead, Editors have performed the same trick on the Joy Division back catalog.

how did franz ferdinand spark the post punk revival?
interpol came 4 years before and arguably were better received

Yeah, but Interpol were sort of lumped in with the Strokes and the like before they were moved to associate with the nu-post-punk bands. Franz did more to make post-punk hot in Britain (where Editors are from) than Interpol probably did, even though Interpol influenced Editors more than Franz.

The post punk floodgates really opened after the release of that Franz debut in early '04. There weren't a whole lot of bands taking cues from that sound around the time Interpol emerged.

Seems like i've been completely oblivious to how big Franz is.

I always placed them in the totem below Interpol

Disagree with retreet, Editors always a distinct sound. Never compared them with Franz Ferdinand. They've had far more good records.
