Drake: "Successful" ft. Jay-Z (Live in Toronto) (Video)

Jay-Z isn't a man who does something without thinking about what he'll get out of the deal. So damned if I can figure out what the hell the endgame is for him big-upping Drake, complicitly co-signing the guy killing off real rappers like Jay with each limp-wristed, oozy pop-rap single he places in the Top 40. Yet here Jay is, acting as Drake's hypeman (not the other way around), as Drake runs through "Successful," his hopelessly bland tale of wanting to be, you guessed it, successful, at a Jay concert in Toronto this weekend. Part of me hopes Jay turns on Drake soon (or vice versa), and then there will be a huge throwdown between Drake and Lil Wayne and Jay-Z. Nas could referee. [2 Dope Boyz]

Andrew, I think music critics like you need not to speak condescendingly about things you don't understand that well. Ask Jay. Or Nas. Or Eminem. Or Wayne, Kanye, Pharrell, or any of the "real rappers" you're talking about and they'll tell you Drake is dope. I'm not even that big of a fan, but seeing pretentious reviewers like you and the folks at Pitchfork describe him as "lazy" and "limp wristed" while you praise folks like Gucci Mane for being so refreshing is a crock of sh.t.

Drake is in the position he's in not because of "woozy pop rap singles", it's because he's a multi-talented artist who put out one of the most interesting and unusual mixtapes in years.

Hov's co-signing Drake, just like the people I listed above, because they believe in his talent, and if he stands to gain anything, it's relevance, given that Drake is wildly popular among young music fans, whether they be teeny-boppers or your traditional hip-hop purist. Sure, he's overhyped, but that doesn't mean he's wack.

I don't know if you should be the one blogging about hip-hop. Just my two cents.
