Drake: "Marvin's Room" (Shlohmo's Thru Tha Floor Remix)
"Wait, so did this song really need a remix?" is the question that always seems to arise whenever a track like this surfaces. I mean, did Shlohmo really need to take on Noah "40" Shebib's instrumental for Drake's "Marvin's Room"? Probably not. But are we glad Shlohmo did? You goddamn right we are.
What's most interesting about his approach is how similar-yet-different is from what 40 did on the original. The synths and bass are still super-muddy and molasses-thick, but the drums now have a sort of industrial quality to them. Well, they're industrial without getting too heavy or abrasive and they're layered in perfectly so as not to overpower Drizzy's sad-man vocals. The same goes for Shlohmo's synths, which complement rather than dominate. If you didn't like "Marvin's Room" before, this just might be what wins you over.
