It's not that Drake had disappeared or changed up his style much. But it's difficult not calling his guest appearance on DJ Khaled's last single -- the hypnotically subdued "I'm On One" -- a return to form. Drizzy brought out that same sadman-swagger mixed without outright rapping and hook-writing talent that made So Far Gone so enthralling. "I'm On One" sounded like it could have fit in on that mixtape or, at least, the Toronto native's forthcoming Take Care album.
The very same goes for "Dreams Money Can Buy," which Drake leaked to the web late last night. It's steeped in a cooing vocal sample from Jai Paul's "BTSTU" that drifts behind soft layers of synthesizers and thin-but-punchy drums. In other words, it's the perfect setting for Drake to drop lines like "Too fucking busy...too busy fucking" while reflecting on his hectic lifestyle. It's similar lyrical territory for the singer-rapper, but it sounds more like a cathartic and inspired release than some of the lazier moments of Thank Me Later.
