“Double Helix” (Video)

Death Grips has never had any problem playing with the idioms of hip-hop, adding plenty of odd and jarring twists to the genre’s conventions. The video for “Double Helix,” a track off the excellent The Money Store, continues this tradition.

Shot entirely through the rearview cam of a Toyota Prius, the video puts an entirely literal spin on the common stock phrase “back it up.” Another touch of humor: When juxtaposed against the manic gesturing and shouting of vocalist Stefan Burnett the backup screen’s subtitle “check surroundings for safety” seems more like a command to seek shelter than a friendly driving suggestion.
