On this year's Toward The Low Sun, Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three painted a wide canvas. Songs ebbed and flowed like weather in the Outback, capable of violent extremes or moments of tender beauty. The song "Rising Below" is especially evocative: the fiddle leads the way, with electric guitar and drums nipping at its cinematic heels.
Director Emma Watts taps into this mystery in her video for the track. Eschewing the dustiness of the sound, she instead focuses on the dramatic aspect characterized by the album art. Stage actors dressed as kings, dragons, and donkeys vie for space on a crowded stage, and the whole thing feels like some avant-garde theater production one stumbles upon in a small town. Come to think of it, maybe that's exactly what Dirty Three were going for in the song. Watch the clip below.
