Diamond District: 'In The Ruff Instrumentals' (Limited Free Album)
It might not be the holiday season, but it definitely feels that way considering the gifts Mello Music Group has bestowed upon us the past two weeks. Previously, the label offered Oddisee's Mental Liberation for free download. And now they're giving away the instrumentals to Diamond District's In The Ruff, one of 2009's finest hip-hop albums.
While you won't find me downplaying the rhymes of Oddisee, yU, and X.O., it would be foolish to not recognize that the beats are what pushed the album over the edge. They were handled primarily by Oddisee, who adopted a gritty, early '90s boom-bap style for In The Ruff. And when he wasn't in charge, the guest production of Kev Brown, Slimkat78, and Dunc certainly fit right in.
