It’s been a couple of years since Devendra Banhart released the uneven Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, although he’s kept himself busy by collaborating with Beck and many others. The bearded singer has a new album due at the end of this month, titled What Will We Be.
Banhart appeared on Jools Holland’s show on Friday (Oct. 16), where he sported a Frank Zappa-esque mustache and drew on the backing of a full band. “Baby” is taken from What Will We Be and is fairly standard rock fare, albeit with a niggly funk rhythm attached. His folk roots are, it seems, gradually being left behind.
