Our previous run-in with Dennis Coffey, known for his guitar work on a slew of soul records, came via DJ House Shoes' retrospective mix on the living legend's career. It was more than just a teaser of what Coffey's done in the past, though, as it was also a means of promoting his forthcoming self-titled solo album. It features several guests such as Mayer Hawthorne and Paolo Nutini, who assist the guitarist with both original tunes and covers.
And Coffey recently previewed one of his covers during a recent Mayer Hawthorne show in Detroit. The blue-eyed crooner invited the guitarist to the stage for their cover of Parliament's "All Your Goodies Are Gone," which replaces the over-the-top funk of the original with oodles of soul. It might cause some Parliament purists to cry foul, but come on, this is some good ol' fashioned fun, Motown style. Plus, Coffey absolutely rips his solo.
Dennis Coffey drops April 26 on Strut.
