Deerhoof can be a ball of boundless energy when they want to, but on Deerhoof Vs. Evil opening track "The Merry Barracks," the art-rockers dial things back a bit. The song's main part is a drunken lurch, dragging itself along like a machine that is struggling to warm up to its full potential. Clangy guitars announce themselves here and there, and the track breaks into a fleet-footed trot just over halfway through before falling right back into its original pattern. An avant-minded rapper could do some damage with this track, if they put themselves to it. Give it a listen below.

Definitely dialing back the Zeppelin-esque rawk of Offend Maggie. I still dig it.
