Deer Tick has been doing the late night TV talk show circuit in support of this year’s Divine Providence album. Last night the group appeared on Conan O’Brien’s show to lay down the jerky trad rock rhythms of “Funny Word, “ which allowed John McCauley to demonstrate his supremely hoarse vocals. Deer Tick’s work draws on traditions from classic rock and other acts who have attempted modern interpretations of popular guitar-based tropes (think: Wilco, Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes). O’Brien seems impressed at the end—this is exactly the kind of band he loves—and McCauley even suggests they go get a beer together. Could this be the Jack White replacement Conan is looking for in his life?
