Well, it was only a matter of time before the lead single from How I Got Over hit the web. No, I’m not referring to the title-track, which was released last year to promote the record’s original release date. But, following delay after delay, Def Jam is pushing “Dear God 2.0,” a refreshingly subdued, socially conscious burner featuring Jim James and Monsters of Folk.
It’s an interesting choice at first listen, seeing how the Roots’ previous singles have been much more hip-hop based and radio-friendly. While this is absolutely a hip-hop track through and through, “Dear God 2.0” clearly appeals to a different sect (indie-rock folks). It’s also a huge about-face from everything else heard on the radio right now. But when have the Roots ever been a group to do “What They Do?” Also, after seeing the track list, this really isn’t that much of a surprise. I’m just interested in hearing how this fits into the rest of the album, which has been described as a blend of soul, jazz, funk, and rock.
How I Got Over is due out June 22. You can stream the track below.
