Das Racist have made a career out of defying expectations and resolutely refusing to give the crowd what they want. Would you expect their live television debut to be any different? It wasn't. They were on Conan last night, performing "Michael Jackson" at half-speed, and rapping in a style that can only be described as laconic.
But in some ways, this is one of the most interesting late night performances this year, in that it's confrontational, and seems hell-bent on refusing to sell the band to any lookie-loo who is watching Conan. It's like the polar opposite of every late night performance you've seen this year. And the Michael Jackson impersonator? Just bad taste, but just perfect.
