Damon Albarn: "The Reigning Queen"
Damon Albarn’s Dr Dee opera debuts today (July 1) at the Manchester International Festival. It’s another left turn in a career full of odd twists and turns, but longstanding fans of Albarn are unlikely to expect anything else. The singer recently appeared on BBC 6 Radio to promote his latest venture, and included a stripped down version of “The Reigning Queen” from the production as part of his appearance. It’s a delicate arrangement that purposefully shies away from the overt pop world he’s been inhabiting with Gorillaz of late, highlighting the kind of depth to his songwriting that he reached with Blur tracks like “To the End” and “This Is a Low.” Check it out in the clip below.
