Curren$y: "Ventilation" prod. The Alchemist

Anyone that's heard Curren$y two latest albums -- last year's very good Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk II -- knows that the New Orleans native loves him some smooth, jazzy production. He has rhymed over some more upbeat, rock-oriented stuff, too, but he sounds best while working with Ski Beatz, Monsta Beatz, and others in his circle.

So I was pretty damn interested to hear that Spitta has an EP, Covert Coup, coming with the Alchemist, whose best work is usually gritty and grimy. But it turns out that the rapper knows his lane and, for one track at least, is staying in it. The EP's first leak, "Ventilation," is as laid-back as it gets with its smoky jazz club atmosphere. It sets the ideal mood for Curren$y, who drifts atop the beat with an ever-changing, stream-of-consciousness flow.

This is great. Curren$y and Alchemist should make a good pair.
