Corinne Bailey Rae’s clutch of Grammys helped boost her career in North America, but it’s to her native U.K. that she returns on this performance, which was recorded on Jools Holland’s show earlier this week. Rae’s latest album, The Sea, contains a number of tracks inspired by the passing of her husband, Jason Rae, who died in 2008.
“Paris Nights/New York Mornings” was the second single to be lifted from The Sea, and is a great demonstration of her knack for a breezy pop tune. There’s a bittersweet center to the song, but the subtle twists of analog keyboard and cooing backing vocals provide a perfect base for Rae to show off her impressive vocal range.
