On first glance, it may appear that San Francisco producer Kero One has the deck stacked against him in this situation. Not only is he tinkering with one of Common's most beloved singles, but he's also completely replacing the original's beat, which was constructed by the eternally beloved J Dilla.
My expectations were high, and I have to say that Kero One manages to hit most of the marks here. The backing track, one of his originals called "When The Sunshine Comes," offers warm guitars and spry percussion, giving the song more of a mid-day feel than the original's sunlight-on-the-horizon glow. The guitar solo at the end could have been axed, but it's a small flaw in an otherwise respectful tribute.
Definitely not a bad remix. I just can't help but hear Dilla's production, though.
Honestly, i think this remix is better than the original. Though, the original is still super dope.
