Clipse

"I'm Good" ft. Pharrell (MP3)

"I'm Good" is the second single from Clipse's long-gestating Till the Casket Drops to hit the net, and unlike "Kinda Like a Big Deal," it's an upbeat joint. Clipse used to do happy songs, but then they found being humble gets no respect, and they started doing visceral, angry songs about moving weight and their record company (Jive).

Now that they're loaded with Columbia money (an advance of over a million clams), they're not so angry any more, so here's "I'm Good," which moves away from the packaging coke narrative that informs a lot of their singles and finds the group stepping back and realizing they're living a pretty good life: "My mattress is full, why shouldn't I be out?" goes a line in the chorus.

That said, "I'm Good" is the lesser of the two singles from Casket Drops to hit so far ("Kinda Like a Big Deal" is far superior), but that has a lot to do with the shoddy beat and the annoying faux-singing by Pharrell that is all over the track. Gone are the Spartan drums and clattering synths of the Neptunes' work with Clipse, and in its place is a beat that sounds like it could have been on a N.E.R.D. record. Which doesn't suit the Clipse in the least.

Clipse are promising another single in the next few weeks. Till the Casket Drops is due out in September. [via Nahright]

couldn't possibly disagree more with your review, this song kills "kinda like a big deal". the beat is minimalist but groovy and pharrell's hook is just infectious.
