Clem Snide

Me No (MP3)

Average Rating: 9.00

The Avett Brothers, Mountain Goats and Bon Iver dominating the alt-country/folk landscape of the indie rock world in 2008, but one of the all-time unsung alt-country heroes is poised to make a breakout in 2009 if their debut single is any indication. Clem Snide has been around since 1991 and they have produced nothing but outstanding albums, yet have failed to acquire the devoted following of peers like Wilco and the Silver Jews. The band broke up in 2006, but have returned to release another album. If the rest of Hungry Bird is even as close to as compelling as "Me No," this could be a big year for Eef Barzelay and company.

Clocking in at 3:43, the song feels at least 6 minutes long, and that's thanks to a brilliant combination of smart songwriting, precise arrangement, and ingenius production. Barzelay's vocals are the obvious highlight; disturbed, vulnerable, and Frankensteinish, he sounds restrained and dangerous, and the lyrics are nothing to slouch at either. I'm also gonna go right ahead and call the best use of a kazoo in 2009 for Clem Snide, no matter what certain noisey folkies may have to say.

Hungry Bird, the band's long-awaited sixth studio album, will be released on February 24 via 429 Records. [You Ain't No Picasso]
