Chad Vangaalen: "Sara"
Don't let the almost tuneless whistling that opens "Sara"-- or the album title from which the song comes-- fool you. The track from Canadian singer/songwriter Chad Vangaalen's forthcoming album Diaper Island is a bona fide heart-wrencher of the highest order. On it, a chorus of Vangaalen's rotate around a pair of spindled acoustic guitars, making for a fractured yet engaging listen. Then, everything comes together at the song's yearning, insistent chorus. "Sara, wake me up when you're home," Vangaalen sings, a perfect encapsulation of love that's lasted long enough to turn into domesticity, still fresh enough to feel like the first time.
